The story of Church of the Redeemer began in the summer of 2004 with people from across the Triad gathering in Greensboro and Winston-Salem to pray and study Scripture together with Alan Hawkins. Though each group wanted a church in their own city, after much time, prayer, and under Alan’s leadership, the groups agreed to combine and lay the groundwork for one common new church. For months, members of the forming church met to share fellowship, eat together, and talk about the core values of who we wanted to be and believed God was calling us to be as a church family. We even prayed through and discussed nearly 50 names before settling upon Christ Church in High Point, NC.
While this group of people formed, Alan was also in conversation with other ministry leaders he thought may be interested in the work of Christ Church.
On March 18th, we installed Elijah Lovejoy as the Senior Pastor as Christ Church in High Point. After some time of prayer and discernment, we believe that the Lovejoys are called to lead this work. They moved to High Point in October of 2007 from Greensboro. Eventually, the group changed their name to City of Grace to reflect their vision that God's grace would fill the city of High Point.
In the summer of 2007, folks in Christ Church who lived in Greensboro, Asheboro, and Burlington began
meeting regularly for fellowship and study under the direction of Alan Hawkins. On October 17th, 2007, we began an intentional look at what a new church in Greensboro would be built on foundationally. On Nov. 28th, we chose the name Church of the Redeemer, after we looked at nearly 30 names to consider.
About the same time, the group from Winston-Salem began meeting with Ben & Lisa Sharpe. The group formed Christ Church Winston-Salem and now host regular bible studies, small groups, and worship services.
In August of 2009, the Asheboro group began meeting in Asheboro under the leadership of Jason Patterson and established St. Andrews Anglican Church. About the same time, City of Grace and Church of the Redeemer combined to partner together in reaching the Greensboro/High Point/Guilford County/Davidson County area of the Piedmont Triad. In November of 2009, a community group began meeting on Sunday nights in Burlington in the hopes of planting the seeds of yet another Anglican Mission church in the Triad.
We look forward to what the Lord will accomplish in through this initial gathering of what was Christ Church as it has now grown into four bodies of Christ meeting in their respective communities.
A great verse reminding us of God’s sovereign plan and providence is found in 1 Corinthians 1.9-10:
9 However, as it is written:
"No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him" — 10but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
