Worship @ Redeemer

Worship at Redeemer is driven by our philosophy of an ancient-future approach to worship - taking the rootedness and tradition of the historical Christian Church and connecting that with people in a way that is culturally relevant and relational.  Liturgy (literally work of the people), vesting (ordained clergy wearing robes) and the weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper (eucharist) are experienced alongside video monitors, drums and guitars and relational preaching.  Musically, hymns written by St. Francis and Charles Wesley are sung side-by-side with songs written by modern artists like Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher and Matt Redman.

Below are songs that were sung in recent weeks and occasionally brief thoughts on their selection and how they fit into the worship service.

"Lead Us Back" is a tremendously convicting song written by some folks with Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky.  The themes are similar to David Platt's book, Radical, which calls us out of our comfortable, homogenized, safe and sterile Christianity often popularized by the American Evangelical Church.  It's a call to something deeper.  One line is particularly convicting: "We've become a talent show...lead us back to life in You."  May we as the Church stop trying to impress each other and allow ourselves to be led back to true life in Christ.

It Is Well - Horatio Spafford / Todd Fields

In case you don't know the story, Horatio Spafford wrote the hymn "It Is Well With My Soul" after great tragedy in his life.  From Cyberhymnal:

"This hymn was written after two major traumas in Spafford’s life. The first was the great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially (he had been a wealthy businessman). Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford’s daughters died in a collision with another ship. Spafford’s wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, “Saved alone.” Several weeks later, as Spafford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, the Holy Spirit inspired these words. They speak to the eternal hope that all believers have, no matter what pain and grief befall them on earth."

Todd Fields is a worship leader at Northpoint Community Church and changed up the chorus a bit with these great words of encouragement: "It is well, it is well; God has won, Christ prevailed!"
