This service opens Holy Week as we walk in the footsteps of Jesus as he enters into the holy city of Jerusalem where the events of the week will take place. To mark this occasion we begin our service by gathering in the courtyard of the church to participate in Jesus’s procession by reading the Scripture and reenacting the part of the people who waved palm branches and sang his praise before betraying him just days later.

This intimate service recalls the servanthood of Jesus and his preparation for his crucifixion. On this night we will remember and practice the new commandment which Jesus gave us, “to love one another as he has loved us,” and wash one another’s feet. We will recall Jesus’s final night before his crucifixion and strip the altar as Jesus was stripped of his garments.

A poignant and visceral service, we sit together on this dark night, recalling the events of the passion of Christ.
