Interactive Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross, also known as the Way of the Cross and the Via Dolorosa (the Sorrowful Way), has been practiced by Christians for centuries to remember the events from Jesus’ condemnation to his death and burial. According to tradition, after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, his mother Mary would visit places along the road to Jesus’ crucifixion and marked significant spots along the way. When Constantine made Christianity legal, many Christians would take pilgrimages to Jerusalem to walk along the same road as Jesus had to calvary as a way of remembering his love and great sacrifice. In essence, they picked up their crosses and followed him.

When taking a pilgrimage to Jerusalem because impossible because of expense or the city’s occupation, Christians began to create pictures representing the meaningful events along the road to the crucifixion as a way of continuing the tradition of meditating on Jesus’ suffering on his way to death. We invite you and your family into this long and meaningful tradition of following in Jesus’ footsteps on the way to the cross.

You are invited to NGP between 9 a.m. and sunset daily during Holy Week to travel, as a pilgrim, through these moments of sacred remembrance. Our interactive stations could be used alone or in family groups. They are outside and appropriate for all ages. A prayer guide and map will be available. They are designed to lead you in unity with all those who grieve in prayer and remembrance, and to refresh your anticipation for the celebration of Easter Sunday.
