Park Mission Team: August 2023 Newsletter

Our Park Mission volunteer team has been doing a fantastic job working alongside our Farm staff and volunteers to spruce up our property! They’ve begun sending out monthly newsletters and we wanted to share them! You can find this month’s here!

On the farm we have two regular hoop houses—#1 and #2, but also three "high tunnels" which are larger than normal hoop houses. The first photo is high tunnel #4 that has been filled and planted with a cover crop (yay!) which will allow us to grow things into the winter. The second photo is high tunnel #5 that has been cleaned out and ready to be filled with fresh soil and planted—high tunnel #4 looked just like this a few weeks ago! We have other plans for high tunnel #3 which has a concrete floor.

Hopefully we’ll get them "skinned" with a new plastic covering before winter. It's an interesting process (if you're interested in learning the "coolness" of how to do it, let the farm team know).

Farm Director Steven Hebbard says: "It takes 1 to 3 months to produce 70% of the crops we grow. Perhaps it's time we stopped depending on fake food delivered from across the globe and continent, supplanting local jobs and nutrient dense foods. We can supply most of the foods we need within a 2 hour drive of Greensboro. Let's make that happen, creating a deeply good local economy, and let God get the glory!”
